For the upcoming Around the Bend I was looking at how to trailer my gf’s and my bike to the event. Quick google online I found out people have used the 5 x 9 utility trailer from Uhaul to trailer two bikes. I went out to look at them and it “looks” like the 5 x 9 might do the trick but without a wheel choke for any of the bikes I’m a little concerned. Bikes may also be a little cramped and I’m not sure if I will have the space for the appropriate tie down points (read on the manual it should be two feet apart). I’m a noob at this and never trailered a bike before.

My bike is a BMW GSA and my gf’s bike is the RE Himalayan. I made a reservation for the days we’ll be at the event, but I’m also doing a test run tomorrow evening to see if I can figure it out.

Looking for anecdotes and tips of how to make this possible.

Thanks!

Shouldn't be a problem - you'll probably need to put one of the bikes in backwards - here's some pics

Did you really need to tie the first two bikes that much? Did you use all the bikes with wheel chokes? Any kind fits?

Having one backwards is smart.

I hauled my CRF250L Rally home like this:

Anyone trailed two bikes using an Uhaul trailer? (8)

Front wheel against the bed, no chock, two straps lightly pulled down, tail gate down. It rode fine.

I'm finding you don't need a ton of pressure to keep a bike upright. Just a snug pull forcing the front wheel into something is usually enough.

I typically put a third strap on a foot peg as well, but probably overkill.

It's a LOOONG way out to Big Bend - I'd recommend strapping 'em down really well. Hitting bumps on I-10 at 70 or 80 can really bounce bikes around back there.

Using chocks is not necessary, but is helpful if loading the trailer by yourself as they will keep bike(s) standing up straight while you tie down.
Typically would use 4 straps (2 front & 2 back) on each bike.

Yes sir, sure have. Those little trailers are NOT light! Hope you've got a good strong truck. I'm pretty sure pulling it is what caused my Tacoma's transmission to go kaput.

Another rental option would be to check your local Tractor Supply, they normally have a 6x10 aluminum frame utility trailer that you can rent for $25.00 per day.

If you have a place to keep it and hauling bike is going to be more than a one time outing, you might want buy a used trailer - looks like the 5x9 uhaul trailer rents for about $25.00 per day (before tax) - here's a 3 rail trailer & a utility trailer listed on Austin Craigslist that would work.

U haul trailer is 1,200 lbs. plus your bikes. Better with renting a trailer from Tractor Supply. I used the U Haul before and it was heavy with my KLR. Now I have a trailer from tractor supply and is only 500 lbs. Used it last year to bring 2 bikes to Big Bend. It feels lighter and no issues!

What size you got? Do I have to go to the store to rent one? Can’t find the option online.

No online option - you would need to go to a Tractor Supply Store that has rental trailer available (not all do) - the closest TSC stores to you are in Georgetown & Cedar Park
Here's a link to show store locations w/phone# in Round Rock area -would be best to call & ask if they have rental trailer available
https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/store-locator?zipCode=78681
Info from TSC website

Have a tough job to tackle? Rent a trailer and get it done!
Pricing:

  • $24.99 - Full Day (8 Hours)

Tie down the back end of the bike's. Those U-hauls have really stiff springs, doesn't take much of a bump to launch the rear wheel of your bike. When it lands sideways it can be a pain to line things back up. Jockeying the bike out of the trailer is challenge when that happens.

Consider one of the enclosed models. Cost is about the same. Security and cleanliness of the bikes improves a lot.

FAQs

What size trailer do I need for two bikes? ›

What Size Trailer Do You Need for 2 Dirt Bikes? Two dirt bikes can fit a trailer size of 5x8 feet. It's the average size for the job as the dimensions are enough to have a little bit of breathing room between the two bikes.

How to load two motorcycles on a trailer? ›

Tip #1: Have Motorcycles Facing Opposite Directions

When loading the bikes, you can save space by having one face forward and the other backward. This helps maintain stability as well — the handlebar straps won't get in each other's way. Just don't forget to stagger your wheel chocks too!

Can you fit two motorcycles in a 6x12 trailer? ›

Size-wise, a 6×12 trailer should be enough for smaller bikes. (For anything larger than dirt bikes, see below.) There are also trailers designed to fit three motorcycles at once, so consider one of those as well. If you think things might be a little tighter than you'd like, staggering the bikes is your first step.

Can you attach two bike trailers together? ›

(If you regularly pull two trailers at once, you can mount the rear trailer towbar vertically "gooseneck-style" and use our vertical hitch adapter to connect the two trailers together--see below.) Backing up is slightly more difficult but not impossible.

How many bikes fit in a 5X8 trailer? ›

Yes a 5x8 will fit 2 bikes.

Can you drive faster than 55 with a U-Haul trailer? ›

The maximum recommended speed is 55 mph when towing a U-Haul trailer. Do not exceed any posted speed limit. DRIVE DEFENSIVELY – anticipate stops, brake early, and never follow closely. BEFORE GOING DOWNHILL, slow down and shift the transmission into a lower gear.

Can you fit two motorcycles in a 5X8 trailer? ›

You can put 2 bikes into a 5X8 enclosed trailer easily. Fitting 3 bikes onto a 5X8 utility trailer shouldn't be any problem at all, especially with Pit Bull trailer restraints or ST Strapless stands.

How do you transport multiple motorcycles? ›

Transporting multiple motorcycles can be done in a few different ways. One option is to use a motorcycle trailer specifically designed to accommodate multiple bikes. These trailers are equipped with multiple channels or slots where you can securely tie down each motorcycle.

What size ball for U-Haul motorcycle trailer? ›

The standard size is the 2" hitch ball. The 2" hitch ball is the standard size required to rent a U-Haul trailer, whether it be the 5x9 Utility Trailer or 6x12 Cargo Trailer. The 2" hitch ball fits most class 3 receivers, which is typically the most common trailer hitch.

How big of a trailer to haul two motorcycles? ›

7 foot wide enclosed trailers fit two Harley side-by-side. The 6 foot wide requires staggering the bikes to keep the handle bars from interfering with each other. The 5 foot wide would be a very tight staggered squeeze for two sport bikes, probably won't work with two full sized cruisers.

What can a 6x12 U-Haul trailer hold? ›

Our 6x12 enclosed trailers have the capacity to load nearly 2,500 lbs with almost 400 total cubic feet of storage! If combined with our 26' moving truck, you now have the biggest do-it-yourself moving capacity available.

How many motorcycles fit in a 7x12 trailer? ›

Yes, this trailer will carry 2 full dresser motorcycles, No you do not need a 2 axle trailer. We can get you a 2 axle trailer, but you will just be wearing out an extra set of tires, bearings, brakes, etc. Call our trailer experts to determine which trailer and options are correct for you.

How do I know what size trailer I need? ›

It will depend on the type of truck you're planning to tow. For a small or midsize truck like the Toyota Tacoma, an 8.5×16' or 8.5×18' should be sufficient. A full-size truck like a Ford F-150 may require an 8.5×18' or 8.5×20' trailer. A trailer size of 8.5×20' or larger is recommended for heavy-duty trucks.
